Week 3 - Finding The Groove

It has been another great week at Tom Baines!

We are in the full swing of learning and are getting close to doing some unit tests in Math!

Gr. 6 Math
What we covered: Students submitted their coordinate projects which turned out great! I was very impressed with the level of effort and detail they put into making great designs!

What we are doing next: Our current unit on using patterns to make tables, graphs, equations has been pretty challenging to start the year off with. So, the following week we will dive into more work with expressions and equations. Students have shown that graphing is easy for them, so we will work through the dreaded world where the alphabet hijacks the number world (Algebraic equations and expressions).

Gr. 6 Science
What we covered: This week, we used our investigation skills to dig into our new unit on Trees and Forests. I have decided to start with having the students do a research project where they had to pick between a forest, jungle, or swamp. They had to collect info and will be using that to present their findings to the class.

What we are doing next: Students will be doing more research on their selected area and preparing a presentation on what life there looks like. We will then use their new knowledge to explore forests with greater detail.

Gr. 7 Math
What we covered: We have wrapped up our Geometric Constructions unit and students submitted some very cool designs that they had to describe steps. The rest of the week was spent review decimal calculations (Adding, subtracting, multiplication, and division).

What we are doing next: We will be using our now warmed-up calculation skills to start solving problems involving decimals.

Gr. 7 Science
What we covered: Like the grade 6's, the 7's are doing a research on a specific environment. This is for our new unit on Interactions and Ecosystems. Students chose one of six different ecosystems to study and understand the complex relations of all the organisms within that environment.

What we are doing next: Research will continue and students will be organizing this information to present to the class. This new knowledge will be used to dive deeper into the unit.

Gr.8 Life Skills
What we covered: This week, we finished a unit looking at the purpose of media. Students submitted ads in various formats and we all had a good time.

What we are doing next:
I asked students to anonymously submit things they wanted to learn related to life skills. There were a lot of great suggestions and we will go over them this week to make the year worth-wile.

Stay healthy my friends,

Mr. Moir
